About Prof. Samaranayake .....

This introduction to the book that was handed over to the President of Sri Lanka on the 1st June shows how big of a scientist he was.

After serving the university system for 43 years, Prof. V.K. Samaranayake retired from his post as Senior Professor of Computer Science, University of Colombo and from the university service in September 2004. Shortly before that, on his 65th Birthday on 22nd May 2004, he retired from the Post of Director, University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC).

In recognition of the services rendered by him as a researcher, teacher, writer, advisor and consultant in the realm of Information Technology and a host of other disciplines in the University of Colombo and the country at large, earning him the title "Father of IT in Sri Lanka", a felicitation ceremony was organized by the Staff of the UCSC, the Alumni Association of the University of Colombo and the IT Industry in December 2004. This felicitation volume is a follow up which is meant to serve as a token of our immense gratitude for his wide ranging contribution. We are confident that it will help in cherishing and preserving that part of our national memory which has enriched the IT landscape of the country.

This commemorative volume is based on academic articles and memoirs by over 40 professional colleagues of Prof V. K. Samaranayake whom he considers Partners in Progress. These are further enhanced by the inclusion of the proceedings of the felicitation ceremony. The contents of this volume illustrate the breadth of the contribution made by Prof. Samaranayake towards the development of Education, Science and Information Technology and towards social action both nationally and internationally. These valuable contributions are gratefully acknowledged.

While no single publication could possibly be expected to adequately treat the subject of this felicitation volume, the collection of articles, essays and papers contained in it is an attempt to document and recognize the towering contribution made to academia, governance and human resource development particularly in the area of Information and Communication Technology by Vidya Jyothi Vanniarachchige Kithsiri Samaranayake, Emeritus Professor of Computer Science and founder of the University of Colombo School of Computing and Current Chairman of the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka. The very diversity of the contributions contained herein is itself testimony to the many facets of life which he had an impact on during his long service to the nation in many and varied capacities.

The contributions have been divided into five parts according to their nature: academic articles dedicated to this felicitation volume, essays commemorating personal achievements and tributes, short presentations made at the felicitation ceremony organized in December 2004, material from the 2004 University of Colombo General Convocation at which Prof. Samaranayake was bestowed the double honour of being conferred the Degree of Doctor of Science and being invited to make the Convocation Address and the career highlights of Professor Samaranayake.

Part I includes articles on themes ranging from Leadership and Politics to Education and Research, while Part II contains the Convocation Address and the corresponding citation. Part III contains the full breadth of memoirs from those most closely associated with Prof. Samaranayake in his work in different fields. It is hopes that these Partners in Progress essays sprinkled with its fair share of carefully selected personal anecdotes would serve to give a flavour of the multifaceted impact that he has had not only on the distinguished contributors of the papers, but also in Sri Lankan society at large. Part IV is an attempt to document some of the verbal tributes made at the 2004 felicitation ceremony to mark Prof. Samaranayake's the retirement after an active university service spanning over 40 years. Part V contains a collection of photographs carefully selected to convey something of the greatness of the stature of the man described in its pages.

A special get together to launch the felicitation volume in honour of Prof. V. K. Samaranayake and to revive the IT Chapter of the Alumni association of the University of Colombo was organized on the 4th of June 2007 from 4.30 - 6.30pm at the Prof. V.K. Samaranayake Auditorium of the UCSC.
