Project Overview:

The objectives of this project were to evaluate existing distance learning (DL) software, both commercial and open source (OS), and to identify suitable software that can be customized to meet specific needs of educational institutions in Asian region. The customization included individual institutional requirements of the system, as well as language localization, of the partner countries involved in the project (i.e. Mongolia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam).

The outputs included an OS DL software to be disseminated under the GNU/ GPL license through mirror sites in the PAN-DLT network, and a set of technical and user manuals in English for future customization of the OSS.

The partner countries share an interest in the development of DL applications using OS software. The Mongolian and Vietnamese teams had already been developing course management systems using their own OS applications and programming methods, and the Indonesia team had been testing a range of leading international OS applications. The Sri Lanka team is an Asian leader in the development of educational computing applications generally. This project played a vital role in the network's activities, by ensuring a consistent approach to course management methods, for recommendation across projects. It created and implemented an evaluation framework of significance in Asia and internationally.
