Project Overview :

The objectives of this project were to enhance collaboration between Asian partner education institutions in this project (i.e. Indonesia and Thailand); to enhance the benefit of sharing existing resources and researches, instead of running the risk of duplication and deviation from internationally recognized standards; and to evaluate the effectiveness of sharable learning object resources in content development.

International distance educators are currently paying detailed attention to the cost-effective course sharing via learning object materials (LOM) approaches. A wide range of LOM methods is currently developing, however, which threatens the consistency of this international effort.

The outputs of this project included a list of criteria/ definitions of LOMs, a sharable platform for the LOM repository, a working granularity scheme for using LOMs in a collaborative way, prototypes of reusable LOMs for flexible, extensible use in curriculum development among the partners, and an evaluation report of the usability of LOMs by partner institutions.

The PAN network has a unique opportunity to identify the LOM methods with the greatest potential for cross-cultural materials sharing; for the network is in the unusual position of involving multiple institutional partners at basic stages of online DL development. The project teams (from Cambodia, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Thailand) represent institutions concerned to develop effective methods for collaboration in course materials development; and their conclusions advise the development of effective LOM resources in Asia and internationally.
