Project Overview :

The objectives of this project were to survey and examine the current practices in course development approaches, instructional design practices, training strategies and training materials across domain specific areas in the Asian distance education institutions; to ascertain the needs of the distance learning (DL) institutions for further training in instructional design across domain/ discipline areas and levels, and across various media types; to develop appropriate design approaches, prototypes, training resources, blended training strategies for instructional design across domain/ discipline areas and levels, and across various media -mix, multimedia and online learning; to try out the newly-developed designs for their feasibility, accessibility, and effectiveness; and to finalize the resources for making available in print, multimedia and as online resources at the PAN Collaboratory site. Specific attention shall be paid to issues of gender, culture and age from the points of view of instructional design for teaching and learning.

The international literature of DL demonstrates a lack of consistency in the degree to which DL materials are designed according to systematic educational principles. This project took stock of the wide range of instructional design approaches being used in DL internationally, and examined the extent to which they are or are not appropriate for use in Asian DL. The two partner institutions (the open universities of India and the Philippines) have long-standing experience in ID and ICT, and have made culture-specific recommendations for the PAN projects in other parts of the region. The project has set an international example for consistency of approach in online learning design.
